Originally posted as a facebook note on 9/17/10 - Wow, the funeral home gave us this HUGE notebook of 'the business' that has to be taken care of when someone dies. I opened it the first day I got it and immediately shut it -- too overwhelming. Well, I finally opened it and read it today and realized that the vast majority of that book doesn't even pertain to the death of an 18 year old dependent. Those books are written for older adults who have jobs, families, 401Ks, lives that have lots of financial details. So I made a bold move - I THREW IT IN THE TRASH. Haha, just one less reminder around here that we had to deal with a funeral home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have my own notebook that I put together within the first few days of Max's accident because I noticed we were writing details on pieces of paper scattered all over the house, and I didn't want to lose any of them!! As an organizer, I kept all of Max's "important" papers in one folder, like his selective service paperwork, his passport, his birth certificiate, etc. So I am using THAT as my guide as to who needs to know and what to do. I have the majority of the thank you notes written (although not all mailed because I still am digging for addresses). I went to the funeral home Wednesday to see what our balance was after the insurance checks cleared, and to make sure there will be a vase on the grave. I have been working with my insurance and doing what I can to be a friend to Haley and to Blanca's family as they navigate insurance, and hospital bills (CRAZY) and funeral costs. I had NO IDEA all of the things that had to be handled. Something that happened in a span of 20 seconds - a car wreck - and the long lasting implications of it completely boggle my mind. It won't be too long before the 'business' of Max's death will be complete. I will not miss all the stress of the business details.
