What is "NORMAL"?

Everyone talks about the "new normal" after you lose a child. I don't believe "normal" will ever return to my house after my 18 year old son, Max, was killed in a car crash on 8/6/10. "Normal Died With Max", and this blog is about the life I have without him.

What Happened - Not Graphic

Originally posted as a facebook note on 8/17/10 - Many people have asked (or been afraid to ask) specifically what happened, and once they know they have found some comfort.  So I will tell you briefly what exactly happened as we know it.

Max & Trinity had swapped beds when she moved up there at the beginning of the summer, and he had decided he wanted his bed back.   He had planned to do this earlier in that week, called everyone he could think of to go with him, and couldn't find anyone, so we had talked him out of going then.  He told us he had a guy friend that was confirmed for Thurs.  We know now that he had just decided to go alone and not tell us so we wouldn't argue with him.  Two gals from work heard of the plan to go alone and convinced him not to go alone and to let them go along to help.   Haley & Blanca.

Max worked Thursday evening and headed up to Kansas City after he got off, about midnight that night.  Todd & Wesley loaded up Trinity's bed out of Max's room while Max was at work into our 1985 suburban.   We know through Haley that they got up to Trinity's apartment, swapped the beds, ate at Waffle House about 3am, and were headed home when the accident happened.   Max had to work that Friday so that is why he went straight up and back.

Haley said they were all in the front seat, all wearing seat belts each time they got back into the vehicle.  She crawled into the back and fell asleep on Max's bed, which is a metal futon with a giant pillow instead of a mattress with springs.  Best the police could reconstruct, coming around a curve on the turnpike, Max fell asleep, hit the rumble strip near the center of the highway, jerked awake and overcorrected, sending the vehicle into an unrecoverable chain of events, flipping three times.

Max & Blanca were both thrown from the vehicle.  Max died instantly - this has been confirmed with witnesses and physical evidence.  Blanca died later that day.  Haley was asleep on the futon, and when the vehicle rolled, the mattress wrapped around her body and protected her from serious physical injury.   After seeing the vehicle, I know now that Max couldn't have survived even if he stayed inside the vehicle.  The drivers side was completely crushed in.

The accident happened at 7:30am and the police were at my door a little after 9:00am.  I will say again, please don't be afraid to ask us anything - talking about it helps us heal.   Please don't feel uncomfortable.  I hope this gives you all some answers as well.
