What is "NORMAL"?

Everyone talks about the "new normal" after you lose a child. I don't believe "normal" will ever return to my house after my 18 year old son, Max, was killed in a car crash on 8/6/10. "Normal Died With Max", and this blog is about the life I have without him.

Transplant Letter

Originally posted as a facebook note 8/21/10 - Here is the letter we received from the Midwest Transplant Network:

On behalf of the midwest transplant network, we would like to extend our most sincere sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your son, Max.  It is always difficult to understand the loss of a loved one, especially a child.  We hope the act of donation will bring some comfort in knowing that others' lives may be improved.  We would like to share with you the results of your decision to donate.

Our tissue recovery staff was able to recover grafts of bone and its associated connective tissue.  These grafts are transplanted into patients who have suffered different types of injuries that need surgery in order to heal.  Types of procedures include various orthopedic, neurosurgical, and reconstructive applications.  It is not uncommon for these grafts to be used to replace diseased bone tissue in individuals who suffer from bone cancer.  As many as 50 individuals may benefit from the bone grafts.

Max's heart was recovered for heart valve transplantation.  These valves will replace defective or diseased heart valves.  Individuals who benefit greatly from this type of transplant are those whose heart valuves become infected and no longer function properly.

Vascular grafts were recovered.  These grafts are transplanted in recipients who, because of poor circulation, may be facing amputation.  These grafts are also transplanted as a vein access for dialysis patients.

The aortic iliac graft was also recovered.  This graft provides vascular surgeons with the option to replace infected mechanical grafts, which is considered a life saving procedure.

Your son was able to donate the gift of pericardium.  These grafts are utilized in procedures including abdominal repair and reconstruction following cancer treatments.

We also notified hearland lions eye bank of your wish to donate corneal tissue for transplantation.   Corneal transplantation gives the recipient an enhanced life with improved vision.

Physicians are continuing to find more and more uses for donated tissue.  It is only through your generosity that recipients and families have a second chance for a healthier future.  Your gift will always be remembered.  Again, thank you for your decision to donate.

*******I guess it didn't sink in until I received the letter from thetransplant network that Max's actual organs were not usable due to his instant death. I didn't realize that organs begin to deteriorate the very minute blood stops pumping into them.  However, I am grateful that he was able to provide so many life-giving donations.*********  Please talk to your loved ones about your wishes so they will not have to guess what you would have wanted in this area!!
