What is "NORMAL"?

Everyone talks about the "new normal" after you lose a child. I don't believe "normal" will ever return to my house after my 18 year old son, Max, was killed in a car crash on 8/6/10. "Normal Died With Max", and this blog is about the life I have without him.

Cornea Transplant Letter

Originally posted as a facebook note on 8/28/10 - Received this today from the Heartland Lions Eye Bank.  I have to confess, I had a fairly violent reaction to reading the letter.  It was the first time that I was physically sick to my stomach since the first day and began heaving and crying.  I did not receive any immediate comfort knowing the destination of Max's corneas.  I cannot explain or understand the reaction.  Here is the letter:

Please accept our sincere appreciation for your granting consent for Max's donation.  It is with your support and generosity, that a recipient in Missouri and another in California have received the precious gift of sight.

As a cornea recipient myself, I can assure you that the gift of sight is dependent on the caring and generosity of families like yours.  Max's gift is a memorable legacy that demonstrates a genuine concern for helping others.

Just last year, more than 46,000 people were in need of a transplant because of corneal disease or blindness.  Successful transplantation gives these people the opportunity to significantly improve their vision and their quality of life.

This gift is confidential.  No personal information about Max, you, or your family will be shared with the recipient.  Likewise, you will not be given personal information about the recipient.  However, Heartland Lions Eye Bank does facilitate anonymous communication between donor families and reipients.

I sincerely hope this knowledge will provide some comfort and peace at this difficult time.  Thank you again for sharing the precious gift of sight.
